Deep Hamburger Sausage & Pepperoni Pie

How to Make Deep Hamburger Sausage & Pepperoni Pie

  • Author: Erin
  • Total Time: 70 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This Deep Hamburger Sausage & Pepperoni Pie combines layers of savory ground beef, Italian sausage, and pepperoni with gooey cheeses in a flaky crust. It’s like pizza and lasagna had a baby—perfect for weeknight dinners or game-day gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade equivalent)
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • ½ pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 3 ounces sliced pepperoni (about 40 slices)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup ricotta cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bring pie crusts to room temperature. Organize all ingredients before starting.
  2. Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown ground beef and sausage, breaking into crumbles. When halfway cooked, add onions and bell peppers. Cook until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are softened. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Drain excess fat.
  3. Season and Enhance: Stir in marinara sauce, Italian seasoning, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes, then let cool slightly.
  4. Prepare the Pie Crust: Unroll one pie crust into a 9-inch deep dish pie plate. Press firmly against the bottom and sides. For a crispier crust, brush the bottom with beaten egg and bake for 5 minutes.
  5. Layer the Filling: Spread half the meat mixture, followed by half the pepperoni slices, 1 cup mozzarella, and dollops of half the ricotta. Repeat layers and top with Parmesan.
  6. Complete the Pie: Unroll the second pie crust over the filling. Trim excess dough, crimp edges, and cut slits in the top. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with Parmesan.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and bubbling. Cover edges with foil if they brown too quickly. Let rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Substitutions: Use ground turkey or plant-based meat for a leaner option; swap cheeses for dairy-free alternatives. Reserve ¼ cup mozzarella for an extra gooey middle layer. Let pie rest fully before slicing for clean cuts.
