Easy Hoagie Roll Recipe

  • Author: Erin Recipes
  • Total Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 hoagie rolls 1x

Description

Soft and fluffy hoagie rolls that are perfect for sandwiches, subs, or any favorite filling. These rolls have a tender crumb and a slightly chewy crust, making them ideal for a classic hoagie experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 egg white (for brushing)
  • 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  • Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  • First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions. Shape each portion into an 8-inch log.
  • Second rise: Place the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Prepare the egg wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg white and 1 tbsp of water. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash.
  • Bake: Bake the hoagie rolls in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  • Cool: Allow the rolls to cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and filling.

Notes

  • For a softer crust, cover the baked rolls with a clean towel while cooling.
  • Store the rolls in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
