Scalloped Potatoes – Creamy, Cheesy & Comforting!

Description

A creamy, cheesy, and comforting scalloped potatoes dish that’s perfect for any occasion!


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 3 tablespoons butter (unsalted preferred)
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk (whole milk recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese (for topping)
  • Paprika, for color

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute, whisking constantly.
  5. Slowly add milk while whisking until smooth.
  6. Season with salt and cayenne pepper, then cook until thickened.
  7. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
  8. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the cheese.
  9. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.
  10. Sprinkle additional 1/2 cup cheese and dust lightly with paprika.
  11. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  12. Remove foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  13. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or garlic between the layers.
