Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 2½ cups onion, chopped
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¾ cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional for richness)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- 8 slices frozen Texas toast (garlic or plain)
- 1½ cups shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Bake the Texas toast according to package instructions (usually 425°F for about 5–7 minutes until golden). Flip halfway for even crispness.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and onions until the beef is browned and onions are soft (7–10 minutes). Drain excess fat.
- Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and tomato paste. Stir well. Let simmer 5–8 minutes until thickened.
- Spoon a generous heap of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto each slice of toast. Sprinkle with shredded cheese.
- Return to oven and broil on HIGH for 1–2 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Serve with salad, fries, or coleslaw — and plenty of napkins!
Notes
Serve Hot: Great with salad, fries, or slaw. Toast Choice: Garlic or plain Texas toast both work. Cheese Swap: Cheddar and mozzarella both melt beautifully. Kid-Friendly: Reduce onion amount or finely dice for picky eaters.
